Monster potholes raise ire

Fri, March 28, 2008

A Lambeth couple is frustrated after being told their gaping holes are a developer’s responsibility.

“Dieter and Linda Solga moved a year ago to a new subdivision on Beattie Street. In the last month, several large craters formed in the road in front of their house. The biggest is 2.4 metres long, 1.5 metres wide at its widest point, and 12.5 centimetres deep. Drivers are forced to let oncoming traffic go by before going around the hole.“I think it’s the largest pothole in London,” Dieter Solga said.He phoned and e-mailed city hall several times this week to complain about the crater he said is as long as two bathtubs. But he was told it’s not the city’s problem.

“The city tells me it’s the responsibility of the developer,” he said.Maintaining new roads is up to developers until the streets become public property, something that has not happened in this case.”
